The models in the boxed set allow you to field: 48 French infantry, 12 Chasseurs a Cheval cavalry, 1 French foot commander, 48 British line infantry, 24 Hanoverian infantry, 1 royal artillery 6pdr, 1 British foot commander. The assault on La Haye Sainte, the French Old guard column breaking against the British thin red line, the French cavalry expending their strength against the British squares and the British heavy cavalry breaking a French square. The rest as they say is history.įor the war gamer this battle allows for a number of interesting and varied scenarios.
Despite this plan (and a full-scale withdrawal of the Prussian force), Napoleon and his Marshals failed to press the advantage, marched 33,000 men backwards and forwards several times inexplicitly allowing the Prussians to reform and the British to fall back to a safe position, Waterloo. The two allied armies were separated and Napoleon correctly deduced he could isolate them by attacking the Prussians first whilst holding the British at bay.
The second was the Duke of Wellington’s British army consisting 30,000 British, 16,000 Hanoverians, 6000 Kings Germans legion, and 40,000 Dutch.

The first was the Prussian army 121,000 men and women largely consisting of hastily recruited and untried Landwehr who, as Peter Hofschröer (a pro Prussian historian) wrote were ‘capable of two basic manouvers, going forward in a state of disorder, or going backwards in a state of chaos’. The allies had only two forces in position to immediately oppose him. To give a brief summary Napoleon Bonaparte, scourge of Europe had escaped from his imposed exile on the Isle of Elba, confronted an army of French sent to recapture him and returned at its head triumphant to once again lead France. Waterloo is one of my favourite battles in history, combining as it does so many ifs buts and maybes. I was very excited to get my hands on this starter set, despite the protestations of my gaming buddies that Napoleonic’s was for elderly gentlemen with bladder control issues and who enjoy a regular pipe whilst clad in slippers.
